LOST LAKE

Who knows where she was when she was missing? But she has been to Lost Lake three times total: Before Veronika went missing she walked to the town border one evening, curious to see what it was like. Not much happened, but she enjoyed the thrill. Once things calmed down after the incident she went there twice alone. Both times she was scared out of her skull, but now she's even more drawn to the place and plans to go there soon again. She is afraid of birds, an irrational fear that appeared once she came back from being missing, and of her fingers being broken. Her biggest fear is being forgotten by everyone.

PERSONALITY

Veronika keeps things to herself. Although wordy and bold, she's quite reserved at first. She's been having trouble making friends after she came back from being missing because people don't trust her and she doesn't trust them. She's always carrying a pocketknife just in case. Odd things make her curious and she likes weird investigating things. The incident didn't affect her personality much, she's still herself, stubborn and eccentric, still charmed by darkness and secrets. Some would say she has masochist tendencies and there's certainly something peculiar about the way she behaves at times. Her manner of speaking is very calm, but her fingers tend to move nervously as they fiddle with something constantly. Due to the heavy medication her eyes sometimes look sleepy. She gets along with others if they can put up with her bluntness. If people ask her about the time when she was gone, doubt her credibility or think she's Russian she'll become angry.

BACKGROUND

For Veronika there's before the incident and after the incident. She was never a popular kid but before she went missing she had quite a lot of friends, not any close ones, but people she'd go to have coffee with. People she'd chat with. Sports were never her thing either but she would go play softball with her friends every week. Her childhood was an average one. Her parents were there for her, but they didn't have much in common with their daughter. They were very quite cardboard, no personalities that stood out, her mother a nurse and her father an accountant. They moved from Tallin, Estonia to Blackwell before Veronika was born and would rather not discuss their background. Even at home they would speak in English rather than in Estonian. Veronika is very interested in her roots, but her parents have traveled to Estonia only once when she was 14.

Once Veronika went missing everything changed. One summer night she went out for a walk and never returned. She was gone for almost a year and all hope was lost before a mailman spotted her by the road to the Black Rock Lake. Blackwell is a small town, rumors travel fast and people were curious and suspicious. It was so odd that Veronika claimed to not to remember anything. Surely she would remember something if the right person asked! First it was her friends, then her relatives and soon after that came the vultures, the press. Reporters and journalists would do anything to get a word out of her. Some even made up stuff for the lack of real material. Veronika's parents did their best to protect their daughter but things would never be the same. If people didn't pity on her or think she was lying, they would be just quietly uncomfortable around her, an atmosphere Veronika soon came to recognize very well A year's a long time and her old friends slowly disappeared, her weird reputation attracting new ones.

Despite what her therapist said she hasn't suffered much from her experience. She's not restless or anxious, instead she prefers to be on her own. She could still sleep soundly, a fact that actually made her parents restless - it was so unexpected, but she began to suffer from painful headaches that used to come and go out of nowhere. She was prescribed with heavy painkillers, ones that she pops almost too eagerly. It's actually unclear if she still suffers from the attacks or if she's just addicted to the pills. She does enjoy the numbing effect on her and always keeps them in her bag with her pocket knife. The knife was given to her by her grandma in Estonia and it weirdly survived the 300 days she spent missing.

Instead of moving out and starting her own life she is still living at home with her parents. They aren't overprotective but they wish that she stays at home more than before so she has started reading more books and often looking up things online about the Lost Lake that interests her a lot. She still slips out every now and then after the dark. She has always been more comfortable in the dark. She studies architecture, emphasis on Scandinavian architecture, but works part-time at a restaurant.
